Program note:
Toy Store is not music for children; it is a reflective journey through the various emotions and experiences of childhood, as they still live in the minds of adults. Comprising five movements, each inspired by a common toy, the work explores the various contrasts and ironies in our memories, with the ultimate aim of resolving them.
Drawing inspiration from punk jazz, John Adams, 19th-century presto movements, and video game music, the first movement, “Jack-in-the-Box," is a dramatic portrayal of surprise, humor, and obsession as experienced in a child-like mind. The protagonist journeys through virtuosity and failure (not literal failure but an expertly executed representation) as the music recalls a scene from an arcade.
In the second movement, "Monster Truck,” heavy metal and 18th-century Chaconne combine to create a musical narrative that is at once violent and hilarious. The electric violin is processed through a distortion pedal. The bass line of the Chaconne move in quarter-tone harmonies, rendering the familiar formal procedure strange.
The third movement, “Mobile," explores the feelings of comfort and fear associated with falling asleep, as one experiences a taste of death. The rain gradually turns into white noise and then harmony, symbolizing a traversal from external to internal. The justly tuned harmonies provide stability while facilitating the transition to and from noise.
In the fourth movement, "Roller Skates,” a resolution begins to take shape. The violin and prerecorded track participate in multi-part unison canons. The movement's musical gestures were inspired by the effortless motions of roller skating and the smell of refreshing air.
Finally, in the fifth and final movement, “Bubbles,” the ethereal soundscape of pizzicati, harmonics, and tremolo evokes lightness and release. The sounds of bubbling water and bubble wraps add tactile quality to the soundscape. The movement evaporates in a short cadenza.

<장난감 가게 Toy Store>는 바이올리니스트 조진주를 위해 작곡된 곡으로, 어린 시절에 가지고 놀던 장난감 다섯 가지를 통하여 어른으로서 느끼는 어린이 같은 감성을 표현한 곡이다.
1악장 ‘잭 인 더 박스 Jack In the Box’는 놀랍고, 흥미롭고, 유머러스한, 정신이 나간 듯한 몰입감
이 주제다. 어린 시절에 시간을 많이 보냈던 오락실의 분위기를 상상했다. 재미있고, 좌절스럽고, 현란한 기교와 실패가 만나는 장소인 오락실. 펑크 재즈, 존 아담스, 비디오게임 음악, 19세기 프레스토 악
장들에서 힌트를 얻었고, 바이올린 협주곡처럼 진행된다.
2악장 ‘몬스터 트럭 Monster Truck’은 헤비메탈 음색에 기반한 과격한 악장이다. 폭력성과 유머가 공존하는 악장인데, 처음에는 하드코어 메탈로 시작하다가 18세기 샤콘느와 조합된다. 미분음(반음 간격보다 더 세밀한 간격을 가지는 음. 출처 : 두산백과)을 이용해 샤콘느의베이스를 조금 생소하게 변형했다. 일렉 바이올린과 디스톨션 페달로 연주된다. 이렇게 떠들썩한 두 악장이 끝나고 나면 나머지 전개에서는 점점 정화되기 시작한다.
3악장 ‘모빌 Mobile’을 작곡할 때는 어린이 시기를 벗어나 유아 시기를 상상했다. 모빌을 보며 잠이 들면서 느끼는 평화로운 느낌과 잠으로서 죽음과 더 가까워진다는 두려움을 모순적으로 조합하고자 했다. 도입부에서 빗소리가 백색소음으로, 화음으로 결합하고, 현악기 앙상블과 바이올린이 들어온다. 외면에서 내면으로 들어가는 느낌이라고 할까? 잠이 드는 듯한 숨소리, 파도와 같은 제스처를 통해 클라이맥스로 진행이 된 후, 바이올린이 자장가와 같은 선율을 연주한다. 이 부분은 순정조로 튜닝이 되어 있기 때문에 약간 생소하게 들릴 수 있으나, 복잡한 화성이 하나의 음색처럼 섞이는 신기한 경험을 할 수 있다.
3악장 이후에는 쉽게 듣기 좋은 4악장 ‘롤러 스케이트 Roller Skates’가 시작한다. 원형 모양으로 쉭쉭 돌면서 경험하는 유연한 느낌, 상쾌한 바람이 피부에 닿는 촉감들에서 영감을 얻었다. 연주회에 같이 연주되는 스티브 라이히의 포스트 미니멀리즘 스타일을 인용했다. 또한 많은 캐논들이 나오는데 전자음악과 라이브 바이올린이 대위적으로 선율들을 전개한다.
5악장 ‘비누방울 Bubble’s’에서 결국 모든 것이 승화된다. 이 때까지 많이 쓰이지 않던 음색들(하모닉스, 피치카토, 트레몰로)을 통해 가벼운 느낌을 추구했다. 비누방울의 물소리, 뽁뽁이 소리 등을 통해 앞의 네 악장과는 달리 몸으로 다가오는 느낌이다. 후반부에서는 짧은 바이올린 카덴자로 증발하듯이 마무리된다.
