Juri Seo* (b. 1981.12.31) is a Korean-American composer and pianist based in Princeton, New Jersey. She seeks to write music that encompasses extreme contrast through compositions that are unified and fluid, yet complex. She merges many of the fascinating aspects of music from the past century—in particular its expanded timbral palette and unorthodox approach to structure—with a deep love of functional tonality, counterpoint, and classical form. With its fast-changing tempi and dynamics, her music explores the serious and the humorous, the lyrical and the violent, the tranquil and the obsessive. She hopes to create music that loves, that makes a positive change in the world—however small—through the people who are willing to listen.

Her composition honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Koussevitzky Commission from the Library of Congress, a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship and the Andrew Imbrie Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship, Copland House Residency Award, the Ilshin Composer Prize, and the Otto Eckstein Fellowship from Tanglewood. She has received commissions from the Fromm Foundation, the Barlow Endowment, the Goethe Institut, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Her portrait albums "Mostly Piano" and “Respiri” were released by Innova Recordings. She holds a D.M.A. (Dissertation: Jonathan Harvey's String Quartets, 2013) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she studied with Reynold Tharp. She has also attended the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome, first year of corsi di perfezionamento with Ivan Fedele) and Yonsei University (Seoul, B.M.). She has been a composition fellow at the Tanglewood, Bang on a Can, and SoundSCAPE festivals, the Wellesley Composers Conference, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. She is Associate Professor of Music at Princeton University.

Juri lives in Lawrenceville, just outside of Princeton, with her husband, percussionist Mark Eichenberger and a little mutt named Roman.

서주리(1981년12월31일생)는 미국 뉴저지 주 프린스턴에 거점을 두고 활동하는 작곡가이자 피아니스트이다. 그녀는 일관되고 유동적이면서도 한편으로는 복합적인 작곡으로 극도의 대비를 아우르는 음악을 만들고자 한다. 서주리는 작품에서 특히 폭넓은 음색 스펙트럼과 비정통적인 구조 접근방식과 같은 지난 세기 음악의 여러 매혹적인 측면들과 기능적 음조, 대위법, 고전적 형식에 대한 요소들을 깊은 애정을 갖고 결합시킨다. 서주리의 음악은 급변하는 템포와 역동성으로 진지함과 유머러스함, 서정과 폭력, 여유와 강박 등 개념적으로 대립되는 것들을 탐구한다. 사람들이 음악을 듣고 소소하더라도 세상에 긍정적인 변화를 일으키는, ‘사랑’의 음악을 만들기를 희망한다.
구겐하임 펠로우십, 미국 문예아카데미의 고다드 리버슨 펠로우십 등 다수의 펠로우십에 수상자로 선정된 바 있다. 또한, 미국 의회도서관의 쿠세비츠키 재단, 하버드의 프롬 재단, 발로우 인다우먼트, 탱글우드 음악센터 등에서 작품을 위촉받았다. 이노바 레코드를 통해 앨범 ‘Mostly Piano’와 ‘Respiri’가 발매되었다. 일리노이 대학교 어바나-샴페인 캠퍼스에서 레이놀드 타르프의 지도 하에 작곡과 박사 학위를 취득했고, 산타 체칠리아 국립음악원(로마, 대학원 과정, 이반 페델레 사사)과 연세대학교(서울, 학사)에서 수학했다. 미국 프린스턴 대학교의 교수로 재직 중이다.
